PMP is a difficult exam (or at least it was when I took it). This is extremely difficult to change the mindset especially if your a good seasoned manager because “right answer” rarely works in real world. During exam, you sometimes have to ignore real world solutions and answer according to PMBOK so you can pass. The method of studying, your natural capacity for focus and concentration, ability to memorize certain elements, actual experience all come into play when studying.

No one would want to post - “it took 1+ year to study, and after 3 failed attempts I finally pass PMP”, especially on a professional forum. And because u only see these kind of posts doesn’t make the certificate any less accessible. Most people want to brag about it only when they are exceptionally good. I lot of people I know took more than 3 attempts to pass and 1-2 years to study. When I did PMP 3-4 years ago, I did manage to study for only 6 weeks And passed above target in all areas, in first attempt.
I’ve learned so much and it gives me a great complementing certification/qualification. I am about to finish up a graduate certificate in Supply Chain Management from Michigan State. There are TONS of great, applicable, reputable options.
If you have an undergrad degree already (or a graduate one too), I would 1000x times suggest taking graduate level certificate courses through reputable universities. Afterwards, I couldn’t shake the feeling of like.all this studying for the test, all this prep, but what did I come away with? Am I a better project manager? Are we deploying these PMI techniques? So what was the point of this whole exercise? Literally just to have this title. It took me two attempts to pass the test. Why not modify to what is realistic in industry? So then why does PMI keep that model? It’s plainly not realistic. Literally everyone I’ve come across remarks about how many steps there are and how no one follows each step. Like studying for the SAT vs having a fundamental understanding of what makes up the SAT, if that makes sense.Īs well, I have NEVER encountered a person or business that follows the PMI project management plan to the “t”. Your 40 hour class is not about like I said, a holistic approach to the theory and practice of project management. Maybe before my time it was, but ever since I’ve been involved with it, that is the vibe I get. My experience or feeling regarding the PMP is that it’s not about holistic knowledge and education regarding project management. Just like some medical students, they takes few weeks to finish a heavy medical anatomy book. Some people are super self study great learner, they may just 1-2 months to finish it.

Second, the test has lots of special jargons and require some intensive efforts to master its unique deep meaning, instead of superficial literal surface meaning. First, people have lots of work experience but do not want to disclose all of them you just a very small part of their profile.
